Perceived socio-economic impacts of coastal tourism activities by women in Araromi community of Ondo State, Nigeria

Abstract

This study assessed the perceived socio-economic impacts of river based tourism activities on Araromi community
of Ondo State. Data collection was through oral interviews and administration of semi-structured questionnaires
on 100 women selected based on their willingness to participate in the study. Data obtained were analysed
descriptively and with Pearson's correlation. The study showed that 61.0% of the respondents agreed that tourist
visitation had increased their income level. Furthermore, 46.0% agreed that coastal tourism contribution to social
vices was low. Majority (93.0%) of the respondents supported further promotion of coastal tourism in the area.
Pearson Correlation analysis showed that there was significant relationship (p<0.01) between tourism activities
and the respondents' perceived impacts of standard of living in the community. This study thus revealed that women
in the study area perceived that coastal tourism activities had positive socio-economic impacts on their community
